Call for Collaborators on VSAT monitoring using Free and Open Source Software
The ICT forum is interested in monitoring VSAT links of member institutes using free and open source software which will be non invasive and have no impact on the VSAT bandwidth. The information to be extracted from the data includes; the bandwidth utilization of the VSAT link, the various software applications in use and other relevant network traffic characterization such as the source and destination address, data volume, the protocol used etc.
The network flow data will be collected using free and open source software. The flow data shows who is talking, to whom, for how long, at what intervals, using which protocols and ports, and how much data they exchange; it describes conversations without actually listening in on the conversation itself. The data collection and analysis will be carried out in three months and the result will be made available to the ICT Forum. Data collection will be carried out within six weeks. Analysis and studies of the data collected from the monitoring will produce:
Software applications in use
Source and Destination IP address
The trend and statistics of the network protocols (UDP, TCP, HTTP…)
Other relevant traffic characterization
The data collected from the network with the VSAT link might provide proactive problem detection, efficient trouble shooting and rapid problem resolution. Information from the analysis may be utilized to efficiently plan and allocate access, backbone and application resources as well as to detect and resolve potential security and policy violations.
The monitoring can be continued overtime producing the opportunity for Network Capacity Planning. The user traffic characterization such as the source address, destination address, protocol used etc allows for a detailed resource utilization accounting.
